Blackthorne has had a fascination with death and the afterlife ever since his father passed away when he was only young. Later on, he fully embraced the Gothic life by legally changing his first name to Black. He seems reserved on the outside but as the saying goes; still water’s run deep.
Although more at home in the city amongst friends and fellow Goths, he is able to put up with the locals in the small country town of Glenrowan by hiding behind humour, but this seems to put him off-side with the locals more than anything and is a major reason why they would rather see him leave town.
Duke, Blackthorne's older brother and Nerida's boyfriend, has a way about him that polarises people. they have no idea how to treat him and they push him aside and let someone else deal with him. As such, he has found ways to slip through the cracks of society and find his own way; mixed with anger, sadness and rejection, he acts out, lashes out, in ways that people are forced to deal with him the only way they know how; and that's to treat him like an outcast and there he revels in it.
If they're gonna treat him that way he'll oblige them and make sure he doesn't get caught.
Nerida Yang tends to be caught in the middle of Duke and Blackthorne and their arguments, she doesn’t want to pick a side because she is on both their sides. She has known and been friends with them since they were young, having grown up together in the same street and was always in the same year as Blackthorne at school. As she got older she found herself attracted to Duke and they pursued a relationship but also created tension between her and Blackthorne, and Blackthorne and Duke.
Her true love has been and always will be coding and computers, this has led her to great heights but has also resulted in her being arrested and charged after she found ways to hack into various online systems.
Only time will tell if she can use her abilities for good, or evil.
Trainer grew up around horses. His family have trained race horses for three generations and from a young age knew that this was his future. He has gone by his nick-name of Trainer for so long most people in town couldn’t tell you what his real name is.
He has a runner in all the big races, unfortunately rarely wins first but has a huge collection of seconds, thirds, fourths and fifths. But this never deters him, in fact it inspires him, leaving only one way to go and that’s up. Outside of the racing community, amongst his fellow residents of Glenrowan, he is one of the boys. Enjoys a drink (maybe too many sometimes), revels in the company of friends, but deep down there’s a fear he hasn’t brought up or discussed with anyone. Most people are going through their own problems and quite similar to his own. He’s not weak, far from it, but he has been conditioned to obey. But he is beginning to see that there’s an alternative to living on his knees, but he has been pushed down for so long he may not see the way out.
The officer in charge of law and order in the town of Glenrowan, it’s a shame he stopped caring years ago. Now, he feels the power, revels in it and his ability to order people around, to force them into what he wants them to do, whether they like it or not. He thinks he’s protecting them, maybe he once was, but now his power has gone to his head and no-one in town feels protected, especially a group of weird-looking tourists who stop in town.
Bernadette owns and runs the Glenrowan Hotel and is known for her hospitality, most people in the town count her as a friend and the three new-comers, and especially Blackthorne, see her as a possible ally in their battle with Drinkwater and the rest of the town, but although she has not picked a side does not mean she doesn’t have one.
Cindy is a mysterious local girl who found solace in the Goth lifestyle many years ago. She spends most of her spare time in the town’s graveyard to find peace and quiet. She finds a kindred spirit in Blackthorne, no doubt they find a connection with all things gothic, but soon finds her loyalties tested when Blackthorne is seen doing things that destroy her trust in him. But this forces Blackthorne to complete the task he has set himself or become more and more like his brother.
